Rank is players over the last seven days. A big server showing offline while the rest are up is that server restarting or wiping, not Rust being down.

The verdict, and what it is built on

We read the public server list in full every five minutes and compare that total with what this same hour normally holds. That ratio, not a ping test and not a forum post, is what the answer above is based on. If you run a clan, this is the number to check before you tell the group chat to queue up.

  • 85% of the usual total or better: servers are up. Your squad's problem is local.
  • Between 50% and 85%: patchy. Force wipe day looks like this for an hour or two, as does a Steam wobble.
  • Under half: broad outage, and it is not just the server you had in mind.

The live count right now is 92,199 players across 11,799 servers. Rust servers are up

What normal looks like at this hour

Rust does not hold the same population at 04:00 as it does at 20:00, so we do not compare against a flat average. We compare against this hour on ordinary days, which is why the verdict can say servers are up at a quiet time even when the raw number looks small.

The chart below runs the last 48 hours against that hourly baseline. A dip that lines up with the force wipe schedule is routine. A dip with no wipe behind it is worth a second look.

If the big servers are up but yours is not

Large public servers going down alone, while the rest of the list holds, usually is not an outage. A restart, an unplanned crash or a wipe in progress looks the same from your side, and it is specific to that box. Open its page and check the last-seen time: a server that was reading fine twenty minutes ago and is silent now has gone down by itself. Clan leaders should keep one backup server picked out for exactly this, so a dead host does not cost the group its wipe night.

Whole-list dips, on the other hand, land on Steam. Every game's browser empties, and ours fills with missing servers at the same minute.

If your browser is empty but we say servers are up

Then the gap is between you and Steam.

  1. Restart Steam, then Rust. The in-game list is served by Steam, and an old login session can return nothing at all.
  2. Look at your filters. A region or tag set weeks ago is the usual culprit for a browser that will not show a server everyone else can see.
  3. Check Steam's own status. When its list service is out, every browser empties and ours normally shows a drop too.
  4. On force wipe day, update Rust before anything else. Servers restart one by one and you cannot join the new build until the client matches.
  5. Turn off the VPN and try again. Strict firewalls and office networks block the traffic a server browser needs.

If it is one server missing rather than all of them, that server is restarting, wiping or down.

Where to go next

For a full sweep of the current list, the live server list is the starting point. Wipe timing and the next forced update are on the force wipe countdown and the wipe schedule. If you are choosing a home for a large group, the highest-ranked servers and the lists for official, modded and vanilla servers sort them by team limit and population.

Questions

3 from the field
Q-01Are Rust servers down right now?

The answer above is live, and it comes from our own full read of the public server list, which happens every five minutes. We compare that total with the count this hour normally holds: 85% or more means up, under half means a broad outage. Nothing on this page is an estimate or a copy of someone else's status post.

Q-02My server browser is empty while this page says Rust is up. What is wrong?

When the list confirms servers are online but your browser shows nothing, the break is between you and Steam rather than in Rust itself. Restart Steam and the game, clear any region or tag filters, and check whether Steam's own status page is reporting trouble. On force wipe day, update Rust first, because servers restart onto the new build one at a time and your client has to match before any of them will appear.

Q-03How current is the data on this page?

Each reading is taken within about five minutes, and the timestamp under the verdict tells you exactly when the last one landed. If the newest read is older than twenty-five minutes, the page says so instead of pretending the figure is fresh. Either way, the count you see is measured, not guessed.
